COSMHYC and COSMHYC XL are research projects.

Welcome to COSMHYC and COSMHYC XL

COSMHYC and COSMHYC XL are research projects funded by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking of the European Commission.

COSMHYC (2017-2020) develops an innovative compression solutions for hydrogen refuelling stations whereas the follower project COSMHYC XL (2019-2021) focuses on the development of extra large scale hydrogen refuelling stations. The COSMHYC and COSMHYC XL consortium is seeking significant improvements in the performance of hydrogen compression while reducing related costs. This will contribute to accelerating the market introduction of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles.

Both projects are highly interlinked and results and knowledge gained in COSMHYC will fruitfully benefit the work on COSMHYC XL.

COSMHYC is a research project, funded for 3 years (2017-2019) by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking of the European Commission. With a budget of 2.5 MEuros, the COSMHYC consortium is seeking significant improvements in the performance of hydrogen compression while reducing related costs.

In COSMHYC XL knowledge generated within the sister project COSMHYC will be used to enhance the results by applying them to heavy-duty vehicle applications. COSMHYC XL will contribute to reduce the production costs of hydrogen and making it a competitive fuel for large-scale mobility.

The Vision

With hydrogen from renewable sources fuel cell based mobility is a key component in response to climate change. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) achieve a mobility service at very low emission levels with a long range. Hydrogen mobility is of high interest not only for FCEVs but also for large-scale mobility applications, such as heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) or large scale fleets of light duty vehicles (LDV) with a high utilisation rate, such as fleets of taxis.

Ease, speed and efficiency of refuelling are challenges for the successful adoption of hydrogen in transport. As FCEVs and HDVs are fuelled with gaseous hydrogen at high pressure, hydrogen compression is an essential step of the refuelling process – and continued cost reductions and efficiency improvements are crucial for the technology’s success.

The Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking

The challenges addressed in COSMHYC and COSMHYC XL have been identified by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) which supports developments targeting H2 mobility through the European Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020.

The FCH JU is a public-private partnership supporting research and technological development in fuel cell and hydrogen technologies in Europe. The three members of the FCH JU are:

  • the European commission
  • the fuel cell and hydrogen industries, represented by Hydrogen Europe
  • and the research community, represented by research grouping Hydrogen Europe Reserch.

FCH JU aims at accelerating the market introduction of hydrogen technologies and thereby contributes to the European targets in cutting CO2 emissions.

It supports energy and transport systems research. The development of innovative hydrogen compressor technologies for small scale decentralized applications for hydrogen refuelling or storage is part of the FCH 2 JU 2016 annual work plan.
